On 6th December Shepperton Running Group momentarily swapped their purple T-shirts for bright green, as they celebrated completing the ‘Perivale 5’ race. Some 12 miles from home, the event took place at Ealing, Southall & Middlesex Athletics Club where SRG founder Steve used to train.
So we made our way from the Co-op to Perivale Park, with WhatsApp messages flying around on everything from ‘good luck!’, ‘where are you?!’ and…
“Don’t panic – Matthew and I are on the way, singing along to Justin Beiber to get in the mood…”
The event was a sell-out for the third year running. Out of 326 participants, 14 were from SRG, plus Dan’s brother Matthew and Sheppertonians Karen and Phil (who really should join…) making 17 of us. Commiserations to Tanya S and Freddie who had to give up their places at the last minute – sorry you couldn’t be there with us this time.
Other well represented clubs included Ealing Eagles, Ealing, Southall & Middlesex AC and London Heathside.
At the venue, pre- and post-race organisation was fantastic, with minimal queues and ample changing rooms, lockers and toilets (and a cake sale). As we warmed up and took obligatory group photos, the mini SRG T-shirts were revealed…
…Yes, for the first time ever, we had a junior team! Seven runners entered the 2km fun run as Team SRG, which followed the 5 miler. Dan and Jess did a brilliant job of getting junior purple T-shirts produced in time, so thank you 🙂
“Fantastic morning! Thanks and well done to everyone racing and supporting.”
“Amazing how the club has grown over the year. The perfect run to end the first year.”
The route was extremely well marshalled, with friendly volunteers who showed particular support for SRG, and did a lot of directing of traffic on a pretty busy Sunday morning in Ealing (all trying to get to IKEA in time for Christmas no doubt).
Indeed, with the big day less than three weeks away, the pacers were suitably dressed as Santas, leading runners to a 35, 40 or 45 finish time. Steve was marshalling wth Andrea… alas, no santa suit for the Captain and his Mrs!
As well as the usual mile markers, there was a little surprise in store. Tanya D had been busy making several motivating and humorous signs and dotting them around the course. There were three altogether, and the one about the Co-op was particularly brilliant:
Tanya did a fantastic job cheering us on, making us smile and taking some great pics!
The route consisted of two laps, around streets and through Perivale Park, and then into the stadium for the grand finale. Running on the track was an amazing springy sensation. Support from those who had already finished was great – the screams from SRG for fellow runners clearly spurred some to a sprint finish and even smiles through the pain… that’s the power of purple!
“Finishing on a running track made the event that little more special”
Out of the team, first runner home was Sabrina (also taking first position for SRG ladies) with 36:36, and first man home was Ian in 36:51…well done! Of course, we each have our own goals, and everyone ran amazingly well (on a windy day) and we have now set Perivale PBs to come back and smash next year. For the record, the first man finished in 27:04 and female in 27:16.
“Well done everyone, such a good event and great supporters, loved the track finish!”
“Great morning run. What a fantastic team. Thanks Steve for making me feel proud.”
Instead of a medal we received a banana… And the green technical T-shirts which looked great in photos! Maybe this will become our ‘away’ kit 🙂

“Please thank all the volunteers from us all, a really superb and well run event, surely now an annual event for the SRGers…”
Fun run time!
The 2km junior run took place shortly after. To quote the official run report: “The seven young members of Shepperton Running Group were led home by 8 year old Finlay Diamond, who was the first U10 to cross the line. The group somewhat stole the show, dressed in their purple team T-shirts and high-fiving team-mates”
“Chloe absolutely loved everyone supporting and hi-fiving her. She keeps telling me she’s a Shepperton Runner!”
Well done to Finlay (8), Charlie (5), Harry (11), Nathan (8), Joshua (7), Chloe (5) and Gemma (4) who all crossed the finish line with smiles, some making their debut run. And they got medals for their amazing little legs!
So, at the end of Perivale 5, there was a great Team SRG vibe with everyone – young and older – feeling supported and accomplished.
To sum it up…
“Very proud day.”
